If you are hosting an Independence Day Party and are tired of serving just beer and wine, here are some ideas on how to save on cocktails and make your July 4th get-together a success!

~ Ditch the Full Bar Courteous guests will gladly accept what you have on hand- just go with the essentials and pick one or two specific cocktails you want to serve.

~ Buy the House Liquor Purchasing the premium brand liquors will break any budget, so purchase what would be called a “house brand” or what is on sale.  If you are mixing it with other ingredients, there’s no need to spend extra..

~ Serve a Punch Get out your big party bowl and make your punch as alcohol-heavy or light as you would like it to be.

~ Make your party BYOB This doesn’t mean you can’t supply some of the drinks yourself. It just means that, in the case of booze, if your friends are going to hover around your home bar, they should at least make a small contribution like a bottle of their preferred liquor or wine.

~ Choose Your Cocktail Wisely Be sure to choose drinks that don’t require some strange, exotic mixer that you will never use after the party. Save time and money by making a simple syrup (sugar dissolved in water) ahead of time- it is an ingredient in hundreds of mixed drinks.

But, if you want to splurge this weekend, here are a few of the recipes for some of our favorite patriotic concoctions!

Life and Liberty

– 1 oz. UV Blue
– 1 oz. raspberry sherbet
– 1 oz. lemon-lime soda

Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously and strain into a glass.

Red, White, and Blue Sangria

– Strawberries and Blueberries
– Pineapple, cut into star shapes
– 2 bottles dry white wine
– 1 cup Triple Sec
– 1/2 Cup berry-flavored vodka
– 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice
– 1/2 cup simple syrup

Combine the ingredients in a large pitcher and stir. Chill in the refrigerator for at least four hours.

Watermelon-Blueberry Cooler

– 6 ounces watermelon
– 1 ounce blueberry vodka
– 1-2 lemon wedges
ice
– blue decorating sugar or blue pop rocks, optional for rim

Puree watermelon, vodka and juice of one lemon wedge in a blender. Add ice (to desired thickness) and blend until smooth. If sugaring the rim, pour a small amount of blue decorating sugar onto a plate. Run lemon wedge around the rim of the glass. Dip rim in sugar.
