I think the Texas heat is starting to get to everyone and there is no better time to make sure your A/C units are working in tip top shape! Did you know that you can save $20-$50 yearly on your cooling costs simply by keeping them clean?

This is not a difficult DIY project to complete and there are no special skills needed. Here’s what you need to do:

1) Turn off the electrical power at the outdoor shutoff or, if you can’t find it, the circuit breaker panel. (don’t just turn off the thermostat)

2) Remove leaves, branches, nests and any other debris that may be wedged up against the air conditioner. Create a 2-foot clearance zone on all sides of the unit and a 4-foot zone above it by cutting back any encroaching bushes or branches.

3) With a high-powered vacuum and soft brush attachment, gently vacuum the exterior fins- these can be bent easily. To access them fully, you might have to unscrew and lift off a metal box. Check the fins, and, if they appear slightly bent, simply straighten the fins with a fin comb from your local home improvement store or even a sturdy, wide dinner knife from your kitchen. Realigning the fins will help improve air flow.

4) Remove any leaves, clumps of dirt, nests and other debris as you look down into the unit.

5) Use a hose – never a power washer – to spray the fins with low to moderate water pressure.

6) Restore power to the condenser and enjoy the savings!
