balanceHave you ever asked yourself, “Is this all there is to life?” Or ask yoursef “What if?” that mophs into “Was that it?” I’ve been there and done that.  I still do that, which I’ve learned is a good sign that my life has become unbalanced again.

When I started this website, I took a huge risk.  There was a lot of uncertainty, repeated failures and insane hours.  But I have never looked back as I have learned so much and have been able to be here for my children when they needed me. We’ve also built an amazing community of like-minded people who believe you can live well on less.

However, I have also realized that through those years I lacked a lot of balance.  And when you don’t have balance in life, thinks can seem pretty bleak and I can tend to get, well… a little crazy at times :)!

Some new research reveals that we all crave balance but can’t achieve it consistently. Researchers* found that 98% of Americans believe achieving and maintaining balance in their life is important, however, only 14% report that they always feel balanced.  Great… so we want it, but the REAL question is…how do we get there?

Balance Bar Company has launched The Balance Project, a multi-year, multi-platform program to open a dialogue that will aid in improving America’s levels of balance.  It’s an online hub to share ideas, daily victories and challenges and even have some fun as we all embark on a journey to sustain balance.

It’s there to make sure the family time, friend time, work time and play time are all equally good times. As a mom, I can speak honestly that our work is never done.  NEVER :)!
According to the study, nearly every single mom agrees that health (99%) and family and personal relationships (99%) are important to achieving balance in life.

balance projectHere is a look at how Americans are trying to achieve balance:

Keeping their finances in order (66%)
Getting enough sleep (68%)
Eating healthy foods (56%)
Exercising regularly (48%)

But roughly 2 in 5 Americans think it’s difficult to actually find balance. The Balance Project’s exclusive guide, Gabrielle Reece, a fitness and wellness role model, entrepreneur, wife, and mother of three, will provide advice, tips and her personal insights for addressing and achieving balance in these areas.  Plus, you can take a fun quiz to find out how balanced you are.

  • Nutrition: Cover the basics. Make as many meals as you can at home so you can control your own nutrition. Take snacks like fruit, nuts or a Balance Bar® wherever you go to prevent mindless eating.
  • Career: Concentrate on one thing at a time. Studies show that we can accomplish so much more and with less stress when we do one thing at a time.
  • Friends/Family: Create boundaries regarding your technology. When you leave work, make sure you’re actually leaving work. If you are pushing your child on the swing, put your phone in your pocket and leave the texting or emails for later. If someone writes you a note, don’t feel the pressure to respond within five seconds and miss a family mealtime opportunity. Make the boundaries for yourself and let others know what they are so you can live a happy, healthy lifestyle.
  • Me Time: It’s ok to just say “No”. Learn to use and love this word. This tiny little word will save you so much heartache and excuse making. “No” will keep you from over scheduling your life and actually keep you free for the things you want to do. Life is for living and not just for filling days with obligations.
  • Schedule one thing you look forward to each day. Have coffee with a friend or indulge in a harmless guilty pleasure. Do something that breaks up your day and focuses on you being you – not you the professional, or partner or parent, just you.

What do I do?  I exercise regularly, read the bible daily, have a date night twice a month with Geno (although we could use once a week), find one hour a week for “just me” (this one is hard to stick too though).  Maybe for you, it’s spending time outside, writing in your diary.  Remember this is for YOU!  Make it yours, own it and do it! No more “what if’s” or “is this all there is?”. The first step is to make it a priority.
