How long should you keep your makeup?

Max time for use:  1 year

What happens to it:  The longer it is exposed to air (every time you open it), it breaks down and will become cakey.  Color may change after 1 year.  Bacteria builds up and it dries out.

Make it last:  Keep out of direct sunlight.  Store in cool, dry place.  Keep lid on tightly.

How much to pay:  We like to see high end foundation prices at $5 or under, and the general. drugstore brands like CoverGirl, Revlon and the like, at under $3 per bottle.

How long should you keep your makeup?

Max time for use:  2 years

What happens to it:  Powder products like face powder, blushes and eyeshadows can last much longer than creams, because they contain very little water.

Make it last:  When your palette or tub of powder starts cracking and crumbling, add a few drops of rubbing alcohol and let it sit to evaporate.

How much to pay:  $1 or less for eyeshadows and $2 or less for blush or face powder.

How long should you keep your makeup?

Max time for use: 1 year

What happens to it:  Although lipstick doesn’t really go “bad,” it does have an awful lot of germs on it, from touching your mouth.  It can dry out and become difficult to apply after about a year.

Make it last:  Keep the cap on tight when you aren’t using it.  Apply with a Q-tip to keep germs down (especially when you’re sick)!

How much to pay:  $1 or less for brands like Revlon, NYC, Wet n Wild, CoverGirl, etc.  $3 or less for higher end  brands.

How long should you keep your makeup?

Max time for use: 3 months after opening

What happens to it:  This is really important to replace, because bacteria LOVES a nice mascara tube!  It will dry out, harden and give you spider eyes after a few months.  Once it starts doing that, get a new tube.

Make it last:  DO NOT pump the wand into the tube before applying!  This brings in oxygen, which dries it out much quicker.

How much to pay:  $1 or less for brands like Revlon, NYC, Wet n Wild, CoverGirl, etc.  $3 or less for higher end  brands.

How long should you keep your makeup?

Max time for use: 3-6 months for liquids, no max time for pencils

What happens to it:  Liquid eyeliners are similar to mascara, in that they harbor germs and bacteria. Pencils can generally be used until they are gone.

Make it last:  Keep the cap on liquid liners, and, if possible, put a cap on the pencils to keep them from drying out.

How much to pay:  50¢ or less for the cheaper brands and less than $2 for the more expensive products.
