Screen Shot 2015-02-16 at 1.01.25 PMMy son is a high school baseball catcher in the HOT Texas sun.  My daughter is a gymnast and practices over 4 hours a night.  I exercise daily at UFC Gym.  Keeping our family properly hydrated in both the summer and winter proves to be a constant challenge. In fact, I tend to drink less in the winter because I don’t “feel” hot or thirsty. But with heaters in our homes and cars, water being lost through breath and sweat, etc. it is especially important to maintain hydration when it’s cold!

The health authorities commonly recommend eight 8-ounce glasses, which equals about 2 liters, or half a gallon. This is called the 8×8 rule and is very easy to remember. But if you exercise or engage in any activity that makes you sweat, you need to drink extra water to compensate for the fluid loss.

Knowing how to rehydrate

Water is the first line of defense when it comes to hydration.  It’s cheap and as long as you drink enough along with a healthy diet, you probably don’t need anything more.  But there are times that our bodies need more than just H20.

  1. Exercising for long periods where sweat loss is high
  2. Two-a-day workouts or competitions
  3. Sickness, diarrhea, vomiting, surgery

In these situations, drinking an electrolyte solution will enhance rehydration by replacing those lost when you sweat. I see most parents turning to sports drinks.  But these drinks can cause serious damage to your teeth – putting you at a much higher risk for cavities and tooth decay. In fact, a recent study from the Academy of General Dentistry found sports drinks contain so much acid that they start destroying teeth after only five days of consistent use.

Screen Shot 2015-02-18 at 12.56.11 PMThere is a new hydration solution called DripDrop that I had a chance to check out. It uses medical rehydration standards to provide consumers with a better way to rehydrate. It’s a powder that you mix with water at home or on the go. It comes in small pouch that you can carry with you in your purse or pocket. DripDrop was formulated by a family physician who was tired of prescribing poor-tasting pediatric beverages to his patients.

My kids and I loved the taste of DripDrop. And what I found interesting is that my energy levels increased within 20 minutes of drinking it.  I think I was dehydrated and didn’t even know it.  I particularly loved the lemon flavor as it tasted just like lemonade!  YUM!  This is going to be an awesome resource for me during my son’s hot baseball games.  And my daughter gulped it down thinking it was lemonade.  Yay…something she’ll drink!

You can purchase DripDrop at CVS, Walgreens and on Amazon.  There are four packets in a box and it retails for $9.99.

We are offering a giveaway to one of our luck readers so they too can try DripDrop. They will receive one box of lemon and one box of berry. Just leave a comment below and we’ll choose a winner on February 25th!  Good luck!
