Things to do in Grand Prairie, TX

 

As a regular feature on MyDFWMommy, we are going to put the spotlight on the suburbs of our great Metroplex! We’ll take one city and break down all it has to offer!

For this installment, we will talk about things to do in Grand Prairie, TX.  Grand Prairie is one of the oldest suburbs of DFW (established in 1863) and is home to Lone Star Park, Verizon Theater and the Grand Prairie Airhogs minor league baseball team. Here’s a summary of our must see places and activities that happen in this fun, family friendly town!

Annual Festivals

Prairie Lights~ Beginning in late November, Prairie Lights powered by Gexa Energy lights up Lynn Creek Park on Joe Pool Lake. You can check out approximately 4 million lights along 2 miles of of path and ending with the world’s longest light tunnel!

Cinco de Mayo Parade~ Each year, students K-12 have the opportunity to participate in an art contest, a parade, and an all day celebration with food, booths, and entertainment. Funds raised support scholarships for Grand Prarie ISD seniors!

Hatch Chile Festival~  This lively August festival features both raw and roasted Hatch chiles sold by the pound, live music and much more at The Grand Prairie Farmers Market. Browse locally grown fruits and vegetables, meats, honey, pasta, spices, tamales, candles, soaps and more. The market is open every Saturday, March to December, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Flight of the Monarch~ This annual event in September celebrates the annual migration of the monarch butterfly from North America to Central Mexico and you can participate in butterfly releases, kite flying, kid zone, vendors, food and more.

Lone Stars & Stripes Celebration~ Celebrate the 4th at Lone Star Park to watch some heart pounding horse racing and fireworks!

 

Parks & Museums

Loyd Park~ On the west shore of Joe Pool Lake, Loyd Park covers about 791 acres of native Texas landscape but  is conveniently close to the major DFW attractions. Reserve an individual campsite- each one has a picnic table and pavilion, grill, fire ring, and more Texas tranquility than you can handle!

Lynn Creek ParkOn the northwest shore of Joe Pool Lake, Lynn Creek Park amenities include a new white sand swimming beach, playground, restrooms, showers, two boat ramps with eight lanes, a concession stand, almost 100 picnic sites, group picnic pavilions, and a sand volleyball court!

Green Meadows Petting Farm~ This adorable little farm is only open in the fall but don’t miss the petting zoo with farm animals such as cows, pigs & goats, plus pony, hay & train rides.

Ripley’s Believe It or Not!~ The Odditorium boasts 11 galleries of interactive exhibits, featuring rare and bizarre artifacts inspired by the oddball collection of worldwide explorer Robert Ripley. Glimpse inside the Taj Mahal of the bizarre with astonishing and outlandish displays including odd inventions, ancient gewgaws, a conjoined calf, metallic prehistoric monsters, and a chance to spot a mermaid.

 

Unique Restaurants (found only in Grand Prairie)

Mixed Up BurgersThe burgers here are all hand-made and prepared when you order. Plus, they mix all the toppings in with the meat, so it is a little different than your average burger. And what goes better with a burger than an ice cold local Texas beer from the tap!

Don Juans Romantic Mexican FoodThis little joint has been a Grand Prairie staple since 1966! Good, simple, fast Mexican food from a family owned and operated business.

The Olive Branch ExpressEnjoy great Greek and Lebanese Food cuisine at this fresh and healthy local spot. Be sure to check out the Stuffed Peppers and Chicken Shawarma!

Theo’s Grill & Bar~ Another family owned and operated local restaurant that has been open for almost 25 years, this down to earth diner boasts great service and authentic home cooked meals like their Smothered Pork Chops and Chicken Fried Steak!
