Gardening Essentials for beginners on a budget

Spring offers some great perks for starting a garden!  Whether you want vegetables, fruits, plants or flowers, there are gardening essentials you’ll need, especially if you’re a beginner on a budget!  Here are some of the things you’ll need, and where to find them without stretching your wallet:

  1. Gloves

Thorns and splinters, hangnails and torn fingernails are all waiting for you if you don’t wear a good pair of gloves while you garden!  You’ll want a pair that is durable, yet easy to move your fingers in. These Garden Genie Gloves are super popular and offer a unique feature – claws to help with digging! Get them for only $7.99.

    2.  Hand Trowel

When you need to extract weeds, dig around corners and plant herbs or flowers, you’ll need a hand trowel.  This Fiskers Softtouch Hand Trowel is under 7 bucks and very highly rated. It has a comfort handle and rust-resistant blade made of one piece so it won’t break.

     3.  Spade

A spade is a short-handled square shovel.  These help with digging holes for plants, moving small mounds of dirt around and much more. You can get a highly rated spade on the inexpensive side (like this one) for around $20, or invest in one you’ll be able to keep your whole gardening life, with this popular King of Spades for just under $90.

           4.  Rake

Keep your garden clean of debris and leaves with a standard rake.  These are inexpensive and you’ll be glad you got one, once you start gardening! This True Temper Bow Rake is under $20!

     5.  Hoe

Depending on the type of garden you have, you’ll need a different type of hoe.  Vegetable gardens need sturdy and wide hoes.  Flower gardens will require a thinner, more delicate hoe.  An hand-held shorter hoe runs around $6, while a long handle hoe starts at about $12.

  6.  Good hose

A long hose with an adjustable nozzle is crucial for maintaining your garden.  This Dramm 14804 One Touch Rain Wand is really highly rated and just $25! Making sure your plants, veggies or flowers are getting the right amount of water helps them grow, and these nozzles are perfect for even distribution.

           7. Wheelbarrow

Cart around plants, soil, compost and more with a wheelbarrow.  This Suncast LC1250D 15.5-Gallon Capacity Poly Rolling Lawn Cart runs about $30 and has a 4.8 rating from over 550 happy customers.  If you need something larger, consider this best selling Gorilla Carts Poly Garden Dump Cart for around $70.  It also has a 600 pound capacity for bigger jobs.
