10 Ways to Keep Kids Entertained In Public

One of the best things to do during the weekend is head out as a family. Maybe to the local pumpkin patch, to catch the latest box office movie, or even out to eat at your favorite restaurant. The weekend can be fun of fun and happiness. While great to have family time, kids get bored easily and will start to get agitated, antsy, and misbehave a little.  These ideas will also work for keeping the kids busy on road trips. Check out these ways to keep kids entertained while out in public.

  • Crayons and Coloring Books – Children love to draw and color. A great idea is to have a small backpack with a coloring book, crayons and maybe even a few blank pieces of paper.
  • Books – If your child is learning to read, bring a book that’s easy for them to follow. Little kids love the joy of reading a book all on their own. If your child is older, bring a chapter book that has their favorite character starring in it.
  • Snacks – A small Ziploc bag full of something like pretzels, cheese balls, goldfish, mini cookies, or even grapes can pass the time by quicker for kids and keep them busy.
  • Finger Puppets – This is another toy that could easily fit into a small backpack. Finger Puppets are a fun way that little kids can be creative with while waiting for events to start.
  • Puzzle Books – There are really fun puzzle books  available for all ages. Younger kids can enjoy playing tic tac toe and mazes, while older kids can enjoy word searches and Sudoku.
  • Make a Face Books – These are fun books that come in a wide range of characters. Some are farm animals, kids, Halloween characters and more. Kids can make lots of funny faces and easily pass the time away.
  • Etch-A-SketchThis classic game is still one of the top toys for kids. Challenge your child to sketch out their favorite animal, your family or create a surprise picture for you!
  • Learning Tablets – There are many learning tablets available on the market that teach kids different things based on how old they are. This is a great way for kids to learn, have fun, and be patient. The Kindle Fire also has a FreeTime App that offers hundreds of learning games.
  • Legos – Now, I’m not talking about the big popcorn tin full of Legos (yes, we all know that tin), but just a small quart size Ziploc bag. Fill the bag with Legos of all different shapes, colors, and sizes and let the imagination begin.
  • Jewelry Making – Young kids can make Cheerios necklaces and older kids can use beads. Pack just enough for one necklace so that beads and cheerios do not end up making a mess.  Jewelry Kits are a great time filler, and offer creative fun!

With just a little planning kids can have fun and stay entertained and well behaved in public. Let them carry around their little backpack, and always have their entertainment ready for them when it’s needed. Which of these ideas is your favorite?
