Things to do in Carrollton, TX

As a regular feature on MyDFWMommy, we are going to put the spotlight on the suburbs of our great Metroplex! We’ll take one city and break down all it has to offer!

For this installment, we will talk about things to do in Carrollton, TX. In 2006, it was named to America’s “Top 100 Places to Live” by Relocate America and selected as the 19th best place to live in the United States by Money magazine! Here’s a summary of our must see places and activities that happen in this fun, family friendly town!

Annual Festivals

Festival at the Switchyard– The 4th Annual Festival at the Switchyard is a FREE outdoor event in November that provides visitors an opportunity to enjoy family-friendly concerts, shop festival booths, take a break in the beer garden or try a bite from our food vendors while the kids enjoy our craft area, zipline, bungee trampolines and more! New this year is the kid’s entertainment held inside the Plaza Arts Center.

Fall on the Square This series of concerts, movies and a 5K happens from September to December in historic Downtown Carrollton.

Comerica Jubilee of Cultures- Taking place in September, Jubilee of Cultures is an annual free, family-oriented festival celebrating diversity and multiculturalism. Enjoy live cultural presentations, music, food and art at the new park and an exhibit of artwork from students of Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD will be featured at the Plaza Arts Center next door.

Parks & Museums

A. W. Perry Homestead- The A.W. Perry Homestead Museum offers a glimpse of life as it was in north central Texas at the turn of the 20th Century. A.W. and Sarah Huffman Perry were pioneer homesteaders of Peters Colony who came to Carrollton in the year 1844 and their property was designated a historic landmark in 1977 by the Texas Historical Commission.

Sandy Lake Amusement Park– Walk back in time and have fun at this old fashioned amusement park that offers rides, swimming, games, mini golf, large group picnics, company event hosting and more!

Mary Heads Carter Park- This awesome park was built with kids of all abilities in mind. (aka it’s accessible!) There are ramps along the play structures, a large rocking boat, and accessible swings and merry go round. Plus, the ground is synthetic grass so easy to maneuver on and soft for any falls.

The Elm Fork Nature Preserve  This land was purchased as a woodright in 1861 by the Bramblitt Family. It was never clear-cut and in 1986 the 40 acres were given to the City of Carrollton as a self-contained ecosystem, virtually undisturbed. Trails are open for hikes 365 days a year from dawn to dusk.

Unique Restaurants (found only in Carrollton)

Blooms Candy & Soda Pop Shop– This little downtown shop will take you on a trip down memory lane with lots of long lost candies  not seen for years. Also, they carry a lot of neat novelty items including a great selection of tin lunch boxes. And their soda selection is off the charts…especially if you love Root Beer!

Sid’s Rainbow Grill~ A tradition on the Carrollton, TX square- It was founded in 1995 and since then has been a favorite ever since! Sid’s Rainbow Grill is an old fashioned soda fountain and grill that serves homemade burgers, fries, shakes, and an assortment of other delicious menu items.

The Island Spot I personally love this place! Awarded as DFW’s Best Jerk Chicken, you can get your fill of Caribbean food. They also have a lot of fun tropical cocktails that will make you think you are on vacation.

Casa Vieja– I personally love this place- my family goes here all the time! Authentic Colombian food and a great atmosphere with live music and dancing on the weekends. A must try are the empanadas and the fried yucca!
