This blog post is sponsored by Amazon. All of the opinions are my own.

Are you still shopping for back to school deals? Or have the kids gone back to school and you’re still receiving supply lists? I know from experience that the back to school list never seems to end. That’s why my top pick for back to school shopping is Amazon. Why you may ask? Amazon is the one-stop-shop for all things back to school which allows moms, dads and kids to find products that are unique and individualized as they are, which gives kids confidence walking through the halls on the first day of school. PLUS Amazon offers the largest variety of back to school products– from binders and backpacks to the coolest fashion and gear that allows kids to express their personality.

As a mom with three kids ages 8, 11 and 14 I know how much back to school shopping can cost and how hard it is to take all of the kids to the store. I love that Amazon’s Back to School storefront offer customers the best deals and unparalleled convenience, as well as a curated selection of must have items to fit every ones needs no matter what grade they are entering.

Below is my top five favorite deals available right now in the Amazon Back-To-School storefront.

Elmer’s All Purpose School Glue Sticks, Washable, 30 Pack

This is a must have deal when you have kids. I split them amongst my children but they are also a fantastic donation for the classroom if you have any extras left over.

Ticonderoga Wood-Cased Graphite Pencils, 2 HB Soft, With Eraser, Yellow, 72 Count

Every list has pencils but these in my opinion are by far the best on the market.

Expo Low Odor Chisel Point Dry Erase Markers, 12 per Box

You won’t find chalk on your back to school lists but you will find Expo markers. For the past 10 years on my sons back to school list this has been the brand that teachers prefer.

Avery Hi-Liter, Smear Safe Ink, Non-Toxic, 12 Desk Style Fluorescent Yellow Highlighters

Don’t forget the highlighters! Highlighters are essential for helping our children learn how to find the text they need to know for tests and worksheets.

Backpacks

Last but not least, the backpack. There are hundreds of styles to choose from.

Build a Healthier Back To School Lunch

The links in the post below may be affiliate links. Read the Full Disclosures!

I keep asking myself this same question lately- how do I build a healthy lunch box for my kiddos now that they are going back to school while limiting the pre-packaged, expensive (yet super convenient) foods that are so tempting to use?  All moms want to pack a lunch that’s going to keep their children full, energized, and focused for the whole day but many of us don’t have the time or at least we don’t think we do.

More importantly, building a healthy lunch applies to all of us, regardless of age, gender, and diet preference. Plus, making your lunch at home can be very budget friendly as along as you plan ahead. So here’s a simple template that everyone can use- for yourself or for your kids just by adding ingredients that fit your needs.

Build a Healthy Lunchbox =

1 protein +

1-2 carbohydrates +

1 healthy fat +

1 vegetable +

water/herbal tea/100% juice

And here are a few examples:

  • Proteins: cheese, beans, grilled chicken, eggs, peanut butter, milk
  • Carbohydrates: whole grain breads, fruits, veggies, pasta rice
  • Healthy fats: avocados, nuts, seeds, homemade salad dressings

So take this new school year to re-think your family’s lunches. And if you also want to be more environmentally friendly, head to Amazon to check out all the reusable lunch packing items that are on the market!

Tax Free Holiday Shopping Tips

Posted by Jennifer Carles on Friday, August 11th, 2017 at 7:30 AM
The links in the post below may be affiliate links. Read the Full Disclosures!

Today is the first day of the 2017 Tax Free Weekend!  Wondering what you should and should not purchase during this holiday? Here is a complete list of  tips on how to shop smartly during this Sales Tax Holiday:

Tips:

1. Use savings apps:
Checkout 51– Offers rebates you can redeem as soon as you purchase select items.
ibotta– Offers rebates you can redeem as soon as you purchase select items.
Shopkicks– Offers coupons for many stores even at the mall. Get points for just walking into a store.
Target Cartwheel– Offers Target store discounts which can be combined with a manufacturer coupon & a Target Store Coupon.
•Target Mobile Coupons- Text “Offers” to 827438.

2. Shoppers should think outside of the Box:

Try consignment shops, Salvation Army, and even the mall! You can get like-new designer clothing at consignment shops, the Salvation Army, and Good Will – so those are smart places to shop for families without a lot of money, or who have several children to clothe.
At the mall, check clearance racks for previous season discounts.

3. Get some of your Christmas shopping in! Clothes, electronics, and stocking stuffers are a few great buys during the tax holiday.

4. Take advantage of lay-a-ways. Qualifying items placed on or picked up from layaway during the Sales Tax Holiday are exempt from sales tax. This is another great way to get some of your Christmas shopping done.

5. Use coupons to save yourself money, but know the rules. While coupon use is allowed during the tax holiday, coupons are not allowed to be used to reduce the price of an item so it will meet the guidelines of the tax holiday rules. The only exception to this is if the coupon is a store coupon – If a retailer offers a discount to reduce the price of an eligible clothing item to $100 or less, the item will qualify for the exemption. This applies to all discounts even if a retailer’s coupon or loyalty card is required to secure the discount.

6. Know your neighbors! In this case, I’m talking about Arkansas & Mississippi. Mississippi Tax Free Holiday is July 25th-26th and the Arkansas tax free holiday is the same weekend as Tennessee (first weekend of August). The interesting thing is that Arkansas allows several items to be purchases tax free that Tennessee does not. For instance, in Arkansas you can get cosmetics, wedding clothing, wigs, hairpieces, and even costumes tax free– but there is no tax discount on computers!!

7. Be sure to make a list and know what you need to get before you go. This will prevent impulse buying.

8. Use websites like My Dallas Mommy which are designed to find the deals for you so you can spend less time doing the research- be sure to keep checking our Retail Deals for some of your best bets this weekend!

NO-NOs:

1. Do not buy a laptop or computer without knowing exactly what your needs are compared to what the machine you are looking at offers. If you are going to spend a lot of money on a computer it needs to meet your needs.

2. Hold off on purchasing electronics if newer models are about to be release. Unless you do not mind having older versions of electronics like the Kindle Fire or iPhones, you should hold off.

3. Don’t assume something is on the allowed tax-free list. Make sure you visit the official state websites and print the list of allowed items. It would be a big disappointment if you spent a lot of time trying to find the best price on a specific item only to realize afterwards that you still had to pay taxes.

4. Don’t forget, back to school deals are very predictable. The almost 10% tax savings today may not be as great a savings as when the items go on clearance at the start of September.

Tax Free Weekend Dallas & Fort Worth~ August 11-13th

The links in the post below may be affiliate links. Read the Full Disclosures!

We’ve got a little bit of summer left, but back to school sales and deals are in full swing! And tax free weekend in Dallas & Fort Worth is on August 11-13th, 2017!

During those weekends, participating stores will refrain from charging sales tax on select items — many of which cater to back-to-school needs. Parents can save on clothing and shoes, school supplies of all kinds, computers, and other tech equipment. Plus, if you’re savvy, you can find back-to-school sales that are active during tax-free weekend, multiplying your potential savings.

Obviously, you don’t have to be a parent or a student in order to benefit from back-to-school sales and tax-free holidays. Anybody who wants to add to their wardrobe, upgrade their tech, or score some office supplies can take advantage of the holiday.

But remember, many states impose purchase limits on eligible items. Often, it’s only items under a certain amount that will qualify for tax free perks.

Here is the tax free weekend in Texas: August 11-13

Clothing and footwear: $100
Backpacks: $100
School supplies: $100

As in previous years, the law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies, and backpacks priced under $100 from sales and use taxes, which could save shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend. For the all-inclusive list of tax-exempt school supplies, click here. For the full list of tax-free, as well as taxed, clothing and footwear items, click here.

Make sure and keep posted on MyDallasMommy’s Retail Deals page as we’ll keep you posted on the ways to save in store that weekend!

Take Free Weekend Fort WorthHow to shop during this Sales Tax Holiday:

Use common sense when shopping that weekend… compare prices at different stores, do your homework and use printable and mobile coupons to stretch your savings! Some advice… don’t make the mistake of buying items that you don’t need just because of the sales tax holiday.

Tips:

1. Use resources like DFWMommy for all of the latest new coupons. Shopkicks and Ibotta apps are great tools that offer coupons for many stores where can earn points for walking into your favorite stores or offers rebates when making a purchase. Target Cartwheel can be combined with a manufacturer coupon and Target Store coupon!!

2. Shoppers should think outside of the Box. Try consignment shops, Salvation Army, and the mall!  Stores at the mall, like Macy’s, offers great back to school deals and even have coupons to make clothing really affordable. For school supplies, don’t forget Kroger and Toys R Us have GREAT deals too.

3. Get some of your Christmas shopping in. Clothes, electronics, and stocking stuffers are a few great buys during the tax holiday.

4. Take advantage of layaways. Qualifying items placed on or picked up from layaway during the Sales Tax Holiday are exempt from sales tax.

7. Be sure to make a list and know what you need to get before you go. This will prevent impulse buying.

8.Also, be sure to use websites like My Dallas Mommy which are designed to find the deals for you so you can spend less time doing the research.

Things to AVOID

1. Don’t assume something is on the allowed tax-free list. Make sure you visit the official Texas website and print the list of allowed items. It would be a big disappointment if you spent a lot of time trying to find the best price on a specific item only to realize afterward that you still had to pay taxes.

2. Don’t forget, back to school deals are very predictable. The almost 10% tax savings today may not be as great a savings as when the items go on clearance at the start of September.
